Upward Basketball is a unique children's sports program.
Upward Basketball is a combination of basketball, character development,
religious training, and overall fun. We make an intentional and concerted
effort to do all four of these things in a 10 week period each winter.
The basketball program is specially designed to give each child an
equal opportunity for playing time and personal improvement. In fact,
the coach does not even have the option of substitution. The playing
time is fixed for each quarter before the season begins. The rosters
are developed based on an objective score that an individual receives
at Player Evaluation. Each team is formed with the intent of a balanced
league. We try to avoid having teams that win every game or lose every
game. Both of these situations rob us of the chance to teach basic
life principles. |

We spend a significant effort to develop the character
of the children and youth that come to our leagues. We emphasize a
different character quality each week. Examples include trustworthiness,
self-control, purity, and obedience. Our coaches work hard to learn
about and teach these qualities during the practices and games. We
try to select coaches that exhibit these qualities in their daily
lives thereby providing a role model for each child.
The main objective of Upward Basketball is to share the love of Jesus
Christ. There are two primary ways that we do this. In each practice
we have a short devotion that focuses on some truth directly from
the Bible. In games, we have testimonies from a guest who shares with
attendees what Jesus is doing in their lives. Many people tell us
that this is the best part of Upward Basketball. Last, we try to have fun! Kids ought to have fun. Aside from basketball,
we have sleepovers, and our Award's Night has become a widely recognized
fun event that is the largest one night indoor event in St. Tammany
Parish.
As a parent, you would like to see your child succeed in every aspect
of their lives and your involvement in Upward Basketball reflects
that. We strive to provide your child with a balanced program that
will help them be successful in their lives. We give God the praise
and glory for allowing us to be involved in His work. That is the
Upward Difference.
